NYFW Conclusions / Panel 4 Continuation

Photobucket

So with all my NYFW posts completed, I thought I’d just conclude with my general thoughts on the whole weekend, and to use it as an excuse to post more photos (ie. from the Juicy Couture After Party and a second trip to SoHo)! It truly was the best weekend of my life. I’m still on a high from it all. During my first trip to NYC, I was awkward, shy, totally unconfident, and miserably cold from the snow. I hid behind Robert the whole time, but this time I was completely the opposite and on my own: I approached people; people approached me. It was actually kind of weird having people approach me…It’s definitely something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to.

I had amazing conversations with just about everyone who would talk or listen to me. I feel like I walked away with 10 new best friends after the trip. I love how easily it was to talk to people this time around. Starr, Tieka, Jen and I talked about blogging and certain issues like commenting back, the importance of a good blog layout, making themes for posts, and so many other things that I can’t remember during the after party like it was the most natural thing in the world! Jen, Jenny, and I hung out like we've done it our whole lives. Home is now a little different after this experience. It’s been weird adjusting not having these bloggers so accessible and near to me, even if they were only accessible for a short weekend. It’s hard not to miss them now that I’ve met and befriended them. Knowing that some of them are across the country and that I have to wait another year to meet them again just make it even more of a torture. In a sense, I feel even more lonely than I did before because now I'm surrounded by people who don't really get me and so far away from people who do.

I’m so much more confident about who I am now. To be honest, sometimes I didn’t wear the outfits that I posted out, mostly out of fear of being misjudged; but now I don't bother to bring a change of clothes. I've said this before, but many of my friends and family have never seen me in a high-waisted skirt! And to continue with this honesty...before this trip to NYC, I was pretty exhausted of blogging—I just didn’t see the point of it. But now I know that it’s not about having the biggest number of followers, or having the best photos, or having the most sponsors, or having the newest clothes, etc; it’s about meeting people with similar interests and building friendships. I’m so glad I started a blog, even if it was out of sheer boredom. I am so eternally grateful for having the second chance to meet these amazing girls since the first time didn't go too well.

Whether I win another trip or not, I’m planning on making a trip to NYFW a yearly thing, and I really hope we have these reunions even when we’re grandmas! Talking to and hanging out with these girls was seriously the best part of the trip, not attending the fashion shows or roaming the city during Fashion’s Night Out. I even opted out of a VIP dinner to get some more time in with Jen and Jenny. All the bloggers are so down to earth and sweet! I truly miss them all. Just by having them as my friends, I would consider this blog a success. Before, I was way too obsessed with the numbers and producing new content with new clothes. But at the end of the day, they're just numbers and clothes, these friendships are priceless. I am so glad that I decided to stay true to myself with my outfits in NYC, because everyone else did too. I think I’m starting to accept and even like my style too.

I can’t believe I fulfilled a dream of attending fashion shows during NYFW. It was such a surreal experience watching models walk down a runway and seeing the clothes up close during presentations. I also can't believe I was invited to speak at such an important conference and with the top dogs in the industry! I was definitely a ball of nerves before my panel, which was the last one, so I don't think I enjoyed the conference as much as I should have, but everyone was so encouraging before and after my panel. Starr even came up to me seconds before my panel began and told me that I looked beautiful and that I'll do great; that was seriously one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me. And it was just what I needed. It was also insanely surreal that Chantal of Cocorosa hung out with Jen, Jenny, and I and gave us photo tips, and for her to tell me that she reads my blog and was her favorite speaker.

Photobucket

I didn't get to say too much during the conference, mainly because Dino-Ray of the SF Chronicle stole the show with this humor, and because I just didn't know when to chime in since I didn't want to interrupt anyone. So I guess I'll just wrap up this post with the gist of what I wanted to say but didn't get a chance to...

Social media has definitely given the fashion industry the tool to include more people. The fashion industry is so stereotypically exclusive that it's amazing how many opportunities have opened up for us "normal" people. Case in point: I'm neither tall nor skinny and yet I was still given the chance to go to fashion shows and speak at a fashion conference. Social media itself doesn't make the industry exclusive, the people do. We really have to stop with all this competition/jealousy between each other, whether it's subconscious or not. We're a community, and we should be working together to make it stronger and better for future generations because I'd like to think we're the pioneers of fashion blogging. I definitely don't want to see this as just a temporary media fad. While I do think there is an exclusive circle that creates all the trends (ie. designers), we are the ones who actually make the trends a trend; because what's a trend without followers and execution?

Photobucket

I think the stem of our competition and jealousy among ourselves is the start of sponsorships, which include money and free things. I think this has been a really smart move on businesses to include "real" girls in their ads because they are so much more relatable, and it's a more affordable way to reach more people. And who doesn't love free stuff? It just worries me that I haven't seen a whole lot of "bad" reviews on items: is it because people are afraid of jeopardizing their relationships with their sponsors? Probably, but they shouldn't be. Reviews should be objective, honest, and strictly business. I agree it is important to maintain good relationships with businesses, but as with all relationships, honesty is the best policy. I also think it's important to consider the possibility that businesses may be reaping more benefits than the bloggers are in these relationships. Therefore, these relationships also need to be fair.

Photobucket

While fashion does affect everyone, whether they acknowledge it or not, I agree with Dino's comment on that we can afford a little exclusivity. It's kind of nice being a part of something that most people are not. I don't know about you, but I don't tell many people about my blog. It's my secret life, and I love that it is. It has helped me develop my personal style dramatically, and I have met so many amazing people through it! Everyone had such unique and loveable personalities, which is why the entire conference stressed the importance of being yourself on your own blog. You can be inspired by others, but take that inspiration and make it your own instead of imitating it. I'd like to think that I have done that. Fashion has come to the cyclical, bidirectional point where it's rare that an idea is truly original, but that doesn't mean we can't try! But don't try too hard...just be you!

As Connie said in her Goodbye EIU post, "Be you and be unapologetic."

Thank you to Chictopia for this opportunity, and to Jen for letting me stay at your place, for taking most of my photos, and just for being the amazing, sweet, smart, funny, and gorgeous person you are!

Jasmine

It's Raining Cats

In my short blogging life thus far, I've only witnessed two universally obsessed-over items: the Rodarte x Target lace dresses and this cat-printed dress from Zara. When I went to Zara to see what all they hype was about, I personally didn't like it on my body. But if I were to style it, I'd probably wear it tucked into a pair of high-waisted shorts or a skirt because the dropped waist isn't flattering on my body type. I do wish the print came in a top-form though.

How would you style this dress?

Outfit post with the thing I did buy from Zara instead, hopefully tomorrow!

Until next post,

Penny For Your Thoughts: Anonymous Friends

(via flickr)

Hello!
I managed to crank out three papers in the last couple days, and I am so drained! And yet, I feel like writing a discussion post today...So sorry if my writing isn't as coherent as it usually is!

So what I want to know is...
Do you tell your friends about your blog? Why or why not? If you have, what were their reactions?

Before I created this blog and way before I started posting photos on Chictopia, my sole blog was my Xanga (haha remember those?!). I started that blog when I was in middle school (7th grade) and recently abandoned it last year (I'm a third year in college). My blog name even had X's in them! That blog held my ramblings, photos, memories, and most importantly, some of my most personal thoughts during the most awkward stages of my life. The reason that I let go of that blog and was so hesitant to start a new one was because of some drama that transpired over a post I had written, stupidly thinking no one read my blog anymore. While friendships are still on the mend or are forever scarred by that incident, I have become so weary that I keep my blog a secret to people I know. Its secrecy is pretty liberating actually. I have a space to call my own and have readers who won't judge me as a narcissist. Friendships have even been formed here. In fact, I think my readers know more about me than my friends do...but I don't mind. You are all so much nicer hehe :)

(via tumblr)

You all think I am sweet and cute, and I am; but I'm also a loner. I think friends just fall away as your romantic relationship grows. It's just inevitable, and some people just don't understand that when I started dating Robert, my priorities just changed. But that's an entirely different topic that could be saved for a separate post. I actually wrote about it before on my tumblr, here. Anyway, as I'm growing older and filtering through those shallow friendships, the friendships I do have now are few and close ones, and with people I truly love and trust. But even then, I haven't really told them about my blog. Most don't even know I went to New York a few weeks ago. I think I'm just scared of being misjudged as a narcissist, because my computer is now filled with photos of myself in different outfits. While I do wish I had a tangible/real person to talk about fashion with in person and to take pictures with, it's comforting having faceless readers who support me. I'm also a pretty competitive person and would feel pressured to dress better than friends if they had a blog. I also tend to dress a little more "normal" when I hang out with friends, which explains why I never have photos from my outtings. I don't think any of them have seen me in a high-waisted skirt.

I don't really know why I'm so embarassed/ashamed to be into fashion and have this blog, but I am. Should I be?

Hmm...I know I have more thoughts on this topic, but I think all the thoughts are lost in translation into text. Let me know what you think! I'm off to turn in my last paper of the quarter!

Until next post,
Jasmine

Penny for Your Thoughts?

(via flickr)

Hello!
Regretfully, this isn't an outfit post. Regretfully--because I really liked my outfit today, but felt it was too similar to Friday's to be post-worthy (I am obsessed with my new jacket!). Now I realized I was just being silly because I'm sure we all go through honey-moon stages with our most recent purchases and wear it as much as possible without sacrificing (too much) hygiene. No worries, I'll wear it out again! Today was just one those days when my mind wasn't entirely present in reality. I was so forgetful that somehow Robert and I ended up shopping tonight instead of working on my paper that's due tomorrow--which brings me back to the purpose of this post...

(via flickr)

Since you're obviously reading a fashion-related blog now, I'm sure this topic has come up in many conversations between oneself and significant others, parents, and friends...

Addiction to Shopping: Fact or Myth?

I always associate addiction to drugs or alcohol or something...bad for a lack of a better word; but I guess all addictions must be "good" in whatever way to that person to be addicting. I like love to shop--there are just so many new and shiny possibilities just hanging there on racks for you to explore. Taking home said possibilities is exhilarating, but I must admit the exhilaration burns out quickly. These "rushes" need to be...reinforced quite frequently. So I guess it does look like I'm addicted to shopping, but it's kind of hard not to be.

(via flickr)

Shopping, for me, is a reward for working at such a crappy job, but I also admit that I could save more money, especially since I do need to invest in better camera equipment. It's so hard to find a balance between desires and realities, especially with something that seems so harmless like buying a cute top or skirt. Stalking fashion blogs daily and constantly being inspired doesn't really help suppress my want to shop either. I never had much self-control to begin with, which is probably why I've never been able to keep weight I've lost off. So when I got a job, it was so exciting because I could spend my money how I wanted to; and almost two years at the same job, it's still very much the same though I think in the beginning I was more careful with what I bought because I had just discovered how much work is put into just $8. Now, it's more like "Oh this is cute! I can make the money back easily in a weekend." It's weird because before I got a job, I took pride in that everything I bought was on sale and cheaper than $10 (remember my prom dress was only $9). Now I've accepted that $20 for a shirt isn't so bad. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad change in mentality...

(via flickr)

Just looking at all the unworn clothes in my closet staring at me each morning is kind of embarrassing, but the discovery of fashion blogs and my newfound interest in developing my own style over the past year have really changed my style. I always donate bags of clothes to Good Will at least twice a year, mostly to make room for new clothes. But I'm hoping now that I have a signature style, the clothes I do keep and the clothes I will buy will be worn regularly. I plan on cleaning out my closet during Spring Break, but I really do hope that I just won't have striped tops and cardigans left...but that's probably what will happen. I also hope that I get smarter with what I buy--buying only what I truly love and that is of good quality/could last a long time (ahem, less Forever 21). I also need to start investing in timeless pieces, like my first blazer and a pair of heels.

(via flickr)

So Robert has put me on a budget until I can control myself: $30 a month if I make at least $200 (I only work weekends) the previous month. The rest is going into savings/towards camera equipment. At first I was a little hesitant and angry to agree because I'm a free-spirit who hates being restricted, but after a while, I see that it really isn't so bad and it is sort of necessary. New Year's Resolutions seem so long ago now, but one of them was to spend less money on clothes and another was to lose weight. I really need to start working on those. Robert made a good point today--I really would have way more time to put into school, photography, and discover new hobbies if I shopped less. Style should be...effortless anyway, right? I think since I started a blog, I have put more pressure on myself to dress better, which might be why I don't post as often as I did in the beginning. I just need to work with what I have!

(via flickr)

Phew! This is getting long (I hope writing comes this easily when I get to my paper...), but I think I want to start doing a weekly discussion-post sort of thing for things that are on my mind. It won't always be this deep or long, but it'd be nice to hear your opinions :)

So...What do you think of being addicted to shopping--does it exist or not? When does it stop being just a hobby and start being an addiction?

I just thought this image was cool.

Until next post,
Jasmine

PS. I didn't buy anything tonight. So that's a start? I think I'm going to wait until Spring Break to spend my $30 :)
